Mental health support for autistic children

Mental health and wellbeing should be a priority for everyone, including individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It has been widely cited that individuals with ASD are at greater risk of experiencing various mental health conditions in comparison to the general population. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th Edition (DSM-5) states that more than 70% of children with ASD have at least one co-occurring mental health condition, the most prevalent being depression and anxiety. Likewise, Autism Speaks claims that people with ASD up to 40% more likely to experience an anxiety disorder, and up to 20% more likely to experience depression. It is therefore incredibly important that individuals with ASD are able to access mental health support.

As we do not currently offer services for mental health conditions, we have compiled a list of mental health services in New Zealand that provide suppport for individuals with ASD:

Public

Kari Centre

They are based in Greenlane, and provide publicly funded assessment and treatment for children and adolescents who are experiencing significant behavioural concerns, psychological concerns and emotional distress.

Marinoto

They provide publicly funded mental health assessment and therapy for children from 4 -18 years.

They provide specialised therapeutic services for individuals who have engaged in concerning, problematic, or harmful sexual behaviour.
